The Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University Hospital Magdeburg, offers innovative diagnostics and therapy for a wide range of mental illnesses. We consistently adhere to current international standards and the latest scientific findings to provide top-tier medical care for our patients. Our spectrum of treatments includes psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic approaches as well as various brain stimulation methods, particularly for difficult-to-treat conditions. To establish comprehensive care, our integrative approach combines inpatient, day clinic, and outpatient treatment.

Our department's research focuses on the role and causes of brain processes in the development of psychiatric disorders, particularly changes in the structure and function of neural networks. Advanced imaging technologies, circuit research, cutting-edge omics methods, artificial intelligence, and our extensive brain and biodata bank provide a strong foundation for this work. National and international partnerships—including with the German Center for Mental Health (Deutsches Zentrum für Psychische Gesundheit, DZPG), the German Center for Neurodegenerative Disorders (Deutsches Zentrum für Neurodegeneratve Erkrankungen, DZNE), the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology (PsychCircuits), the University of Iowa (Iowa City, IA, USA), and the Allen Institute for Brain Science (Seattle, WA, USA)— allow our department to engage in active scientific exchange with top research institutions worldwide.

Teaching is a special priority for us. Psychiatry and Psychotherapy is one of the core subjects in med school. We also offer a broad range of didactic opportunities for psychology students. Our department provides a comprehensive specialist training program in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy.
